Outdoor enthusiasts planning trips to Arizona’s national forests should be aware of increased fire restrictions, area closures, and elevated fire danger across the state. With hot, dry summer conditions in full effect, multiple forests are implementing precautionary measures to help prevent wildfires.

Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions continue, with additional area closures near Greer and Promontory Butte. Fire danger is Very High across the Black Mesa, Clifton, and Springerville Ranger Districts, while the Alpine and Lakeside districts are rated at High.

Coconino National Forest

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are active, along with camping and vehicle restrictions in popular areas like Fossil Creek. Fire danger is Very High for the Flagstaff, Mogollon Rim, and Red Rock Ranger Districts.

Coronado National Forest

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions and a recreational shooting ban are in effect. Fire danger throughout the forest is considered Very High.

Kaibab National Forest

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions apply to the Williams Ranger District, with Stage 1 restrictions for the North Kaibab and Tusayan districts. Temporary closures include areas near Bill Williams Mountain and Forest Road 354. Fire danger is Very High throughout all districts.

Tonto National Forest

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in place in Tonto National Forest, along with an emergency recreational shooting ban. Seasonal closures to protect bald eagle nesting sites remain along the Lower Salt River, and Fossil Creek remains closed to motor vehicle traffic. Fire danger is rated Very High across the Payson/Pleasant Valley, Tonto Basin, Globe, and Mesa/Cave Creek areas.


Trail users, campers, and all visitors are urged to check specific forest websites for full restriction details before heading out. Follow all posted signs, avoid campfires where prohibited, and report any signs of wildfire immediately. Stay safe and help protect Arizona’s public lands this summer.
