Families looking for a day of hands-on outdoor adventure won’t want to miss the annual Payson Wildlife Fair, set for Saturday, May 3, at Green Valley Park. Running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the free event will feature everything from live wildlife encounters and archery to trout fishing and fly-casting demonstrations.

The fair is a collaborative effort between the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD), Tonto National Forest, and the Town of Payson Parks and Recreation Department. The event, designed to celebrate Arizona’s natural heritage, aims to connect families with the state’s rich wildlife resources and encourage conservation.

Green Valley Lake will be freshly stocked with rainbow trout for the occasion, and attendees can fish without a license. Bait and loaner rods will be available at no cost, thanks in part to a youth-focused sponsorship from the Mogollon Sporting Association.

Other highlights include an archery range, educational booths from local and state organizations, appearances by AZGFD wildlife experts, and a chance to meet iconic forest mascot Smokey Bear. Food trucks will also be on-site to keep visitors fueled throughout the day.

“It’s the perfect day to get out in the cool pines,” said Alex Flickinger, AZGFD public affairs community liaison. “We’ll have a freshly stocked lake, interesting wildlife to see up close and learn about, yummy food trucks, and fun for everyone!”

Organizers hope the fair inspires a deeper appreciation for Arizona’s diverse ecosystems while offering a fun, interactive experience for all ages.
