It’s Memorial Day Weekend and outdoor recreation agencies, including Arizona State Parks and Trails, are thrilled to celebrate the unofficial start of summer by welcoming in visitors to wild places across the state. AZ State Parks reminds recreationists to enjoy responsibly and with caution.

Remember that with increased crowds expected at popular spots, it is very important to follow essential safety practices.

Boating

  • Be sure that everyone aboard wears a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Children 12 years old and under must wear a life preserver whenever the boat is moving.
  • Life jackets are the simplest and most effective way to prevent water-related accidents.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while operating a boat – it is both dangerous and illegal!

Arizona heat

  • Always check the weather forecast before your trip and be prepared for extreme heat.
  • Staying hydrated is crucial, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Know and respect your physical limits when hiking or biking.

Campfire and wildfire

  • With wildfires already occurring across Arizona, fire safety is critical.
  • Check for fire restrictions in your area this holiday weekend.
  • If campfires are permitted where you are recreating, remember to never leave them unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished before leaving.
  • Avoid parking vehicles or using equipment on dry grass, as the heat from engines can start fires.
  • Make sure your tow chains are not dragging to prevent roadside brush fires.

“We want everyone to enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities Arizona has to offer,” said Michelle Thompson, deputy assistant director of Communications and Research at Arizona State Parks and Trails. “By following these safety guidelines, you can help ensure a fun and safe holiday weekend for you and your loved ones.”
