Starting in early April 2024, the trailhead leading to Flagstaff’s renowned Elden Lookout and Fatmans Loop trails will be off-limits for two months.
Despite the closure, recreationists can still access the trails via a short access trail near the eastern parking lot of the Flagstaff Ranger Station (located at 5075 N. Highway 89).

The Coconino-announced closure aims to ensure public safety and provide space for construction activities. During this period, the trailhead will undergo reconstruction, including repaving and enlarging the parking area to accommodate around 50 vehicles and enhance visitor facilities.
The construction is slated for completion in June 2024. This upgrade forms part of the broader Mt. Elden Dry Lake Hills Recreation Planning Project initiated in 2022, following extensive community engagement. It is one of several ongoing projects on the Coconino National Forest, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, aimed at reviving outdoor recreation facilities across the forest.
