Celebrating the challenges and rewards of Phoenix hiking

This nationally acclaimed hiking event, The Phoenix Summit Challenge, invites hikers to put their physical endurance and mental fortitude to the test on November 4, 2023. The hiking event will occupy 8 trails in the immediate Phoenix area. If you’re planning a Phoenix hike in the cooling fall weather, be aware of trails on the PSC23 route and trailhead and parking closures. On the other hand, there might still be time to register and participate in the unique hiking event, expo, and post-hiking festival.

Whether you might push your boundaries in the 24.8-mile PHX7, elevate your performance in the 17.1-mile PHX5, embark on your inaugural PSC journey in the 16.4-mile PHX4, or demonstrate your ability to conquer any obstacle in the PHX All Abilities, PSC23 has a challenge made for you.

The Phoenix Summit Challenge isn’t about being the fastest hiker; it’s about discovering the strength within yourself and motivating others to strive for greater achievements. Check for remaining openings here.

Trails affected by the Phoenix Summit Challenge 2023

All trails used in the PSC23 remain open to the public, but added caution and consideration is urged by event organizers and the city of Phoenix. They suggest that hikers instead choose alternate trails on event day. To note, trail traffic is expected to be heavier than usual which may add stress to any dogs on trail and possibly cause unsafe situations for themselves or hikers.

These are the trails PSC23 participants will be using on the Nov. 4 event beginning as early as 5am:

These trailheads will be closed to non-participants during the PSC23 event:

  • Desert Vista Trailhead
  • Piestewa Trailhead

Note that trails here do remain open to the public, but accessing them may be tricky as their trailheads are closed for event parking only.

South Mountain Activity Complex used for UROCK Festival

The South Mountain Activity Complex will be used for the PSC23’s post-hike festival and offers a venue for participants to commemorate their hiking achievement. Participants at the Festival will loosen their boots, relish a delectable dinner, savor a refreshing beverage, and treat themselves to a well-earned massage.

  • The festival starts at 12:30 p.m. and wraps up at 6:30 p.m.
  • Guests of participants are encouraged to join, and registered hikers have the option to purchase extra dinner and beverage tokens at the Mandatory Bag Pick-Up and Expo.
  • A limited quantity of additional dinner and beverage tokens will also be accessible for purchase on the event day.
